Artesanía Textil de Grazalema, heir to this long tradition of handcrafted blanket weaving is the only business that continues active. Though it might be difficult to believe, before the Industrial Revolution, up to four thousand workers were employed in the textile industry, in businesses and the various guilds specialized in specific production processes, such as wool washing, dyeing, weaving, beating, etc., so that Grazalema became an important manufacturing centre, known for its high-quality products beyond the limits of the region. Grazalema blankets, ponchos and later, the woollen cloth that became synonymous with Grazalema and made it possible for the town to enjoy more splendour and wealth than any other village in the area, in spite of its isolation due to its mountainous territory and lack of communication other than horse paths. This is demonstrated by the first cadastral census carried out by the Marques de la Ensenada in 1759.
